Meeru Wins Game Fishing Challenge
Maldives Promotion House – Maldives Game Fishing Association (MGFA) has announced that their inaugural game fishing tournament was won by the team from Meeru Island Resort.
The team emerged as the winner with 443.7 points. Bandos Island resort was the runner up with 380.6. The awarding ceremony was held at Bandos Island resort on 12th November. A total of nine teams which included three foreign teams took part in the tournament which was held from 9th to 12th November.
The champion team will be invited to the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA)’s World Championship to be held in Hawai. MGFA Vice President Ahmed Nazeer said that game fishing had the potential to attract a new tourism segments.
He added that the specific nature of the sport would attract long-anglers from the United States. MGFA said that they are planning to make the tournament as an annual tourism event.
Many local and international fishermen participated in the international competition. Targeted species in the tournament were Marlin (Mas Hibaru), Sailfish (Hibaru), Yellowfin Tuna (Kanneli), Big eye tuna (Kanneli), Dog Tooth Tuna (Voshi mas) and Wahoo (Kuru mas) which were fished using 20, 30, 50 and 80 pound line classes with minimum weight on all class lines.
