Ibrahim Nasir International Airport Opens Premium Lounge
Maldives Promotion House – Ibrahim Nasir International Airport recently opened a new premium lounge called The Plaza Premium lounge. In an effort to renovation the airport terminal, GMR, the airport operators began the work some 2 months ago.
Designed by Hong Kong-based Premium Port Lounge Management Company Private Ltd, the new design may enable the further increase of planes to Malé. Tourism Minister Maryam Zulfa and GMR CEO Andrew Harrison participated in the opening ceremony.
“This is a proud moment,” Zulfa said. “It is sad that some of the resorts and institutions in the Maldives do not measure up to the standards of our premium customers. I am happy that GMR is setting an example for the Maldives as it moves forward.”
Other recent developments to the airport include the extension of baggage beltways. Eight more check-in counters and two more security lanes are also being added. The washrooms and check-in counters are also being refurbished to present a more Maldivian welcome and the former staffs has already been re-trained to meet premium standards.
“We are de-bottlenecking departures, and things are running smoothly,” GMR Chief Commercial Officer Prasad Gopalan, said. Gopalan also confirmed that the airport’s traffic increase this year was higher than expected. “There is more traffic from Asia, and we are expecting Russian traffic to increase as well,” he added.
The lounge is open to first and business class passengers, and to economy class passengers for an undetermined fee. Services include a buffet and a la carte menu, computer and internet access, television, and spa-style foot rubs.
The new terminal at INIA is expected to be completed over the next three years, and will have a capacity of 5 million. The renovation’s estimated cost is USD 1 million and more renovations are expected to be completed before the tourism peak season of November and December.
