Tourism Statistics: China Continues to Dominate the Market

Maldives Promotion House – According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, statistics show that over half a million tourists visited Maldives during the first seven months of this year.

Statistics show that the number of tourists to Maldives between January and July 2011, has an 18.3 percent increase. Which means that 520,483 tourists visited Maldives this year, compared to the 439,864 tourists in the same period of last year.

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives in July alone increased by 26.7 percent compared to the same period of last year. This is a staggering increase of 72,516 tourists. However China still dominates the tourism market with 103,734 tourists in the first seven months of the year. This accounts for 19.9 percent of the total arrivals. This is an increase of 65.6 percent from January to July 2011.

UK has also been seconded as a contributor to the Maldives tourism industry with 60,021 tourists and Italy follows on the third with 53,493 tourists. Thus 11.7 percent of total arrivals are from UK, which is a 6.1 percent decrease, and 10.3 percent are from Italy, which is a 3.8 percent decrease.

During the past seven months, Maldivian resorts operated 24,156 beds, while the tourists spent an average of 7.2 days in the country. The average occupancy rate of the resorts remained at 80.1 percent.
