Maldives National Sailing Team to compete in its first international tournament – Maldives National Sailing Team is set to compete in its first international tournament with sail being set for the 2015 Indian Ocean Island Games held at Réunion from 1st to 8th of August 2015.

Mr. Hussain Aamil the president of the Maldives Sailing Association said regarding the participation, “This is a great opportunity for Maldivian skippers to show and test their skills in a international regatta while gaining invaluable experience as this is our first participation”.  He also highlighted “based on skipper skills there is high hope for gold”.


With over 99% of the Maldives being ocean, sailing dhoani’s was the only means of transportation in the early days until the era of motorized dhoani’s. Currently, sailing is more of a leisure activity offered in many of the luxury resorts in the Maldives.

Sailing Association hopes that with the participation in its first International tournament will draw more youth towards to the sport with renewed interest and passion. Sailing Association remains committed to such efforts and those by the government since its inception and also participated in the recently held Water Sports Festival in April to mark the Maldives 50th anniversary of independence.

The team has 4 Male and 2 Female skippers.

National sailing team is scheduled to camp for one month in Seychelles before traveling to the 2015 Indian Ocean Island Games in Réunion.
