Veligandu Island Resort introduces eco-friendly paper straws
Veligandu Island Resort and Spa has replaced plastic straws with eco-friendly paper straws.
The new initiative will reduce the use of approximately 225,000 plastic straws at the resort annually — an estimated 3.67 plastic straws per guest.
“Now you can enjoy a delicious cocktail on your favorite Island paradise with much less impact on our beautiful environment,” an announcement by the resort read.
“We’re one step closer to a plastic-free future.”
While plastic is one of the most defining inventions of our time, its negative environmental impact is undeniable. Globally, 300 million tons of plastic are produced on an annual basis and around 8.8 million tons are dumped into the oceans.
The throwaway nature of single-use, seemingly harmless plastic straws are actually one of the top two polluters of the ocean, and each straw takes up to 500 years to decompose. The total number of plastic straws used daily is so large that no global usage figure exists. But Americans alone use 500 million straws daily, according to the National Park Service.
Veligandu, surrounded by a beautiful lagoon and a long stretch of white sandy beach, is the only resort on the island of Veligandu in North Ari Atoll. The resort, which is accessible by a scenic 20-minute seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport, hasĀ 91 rooms, including 54 Jacuzzi Water Villas, 10 Water Villas, 16 Jacuzzi Beach Villas and 11 Beach Villas.
