The Island President to Premiere in Maldives
Maldives Promotion House – The dramatic Hollywood-style feature documentary portraying the issue of global warming and the efforts by President Mohamed Nasheed to protect Maldives, The Island President, is to be premiered in Maldives on 23rd November.
The film will premiere at Dharubaaruge on Wednesday evening at 08:00 PM. It will also be screened at 11.30 PM on Wednesday and at Athena Cinema on Thursday at 08.30 PM and 11.30 PM. While tickets for the Athena showings must be bought from the cinema. Tickets for the event cost MVR 80 for the premiere and MVR 50 for the screening shows.
Earlier the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award for Best Documentary. It has only been screened at four major international film festivals, at Telluride, Toronto, Doc NYC, and IDFA Amsterdam, making Maldivians among the first to see the new film.
Directed by award-winning director Jon Shenk, The Island President captures President Nasheed’s battle against global warming, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009 where the film provides a rare and unprecedented glimpse at his electrifying and passionate behind the scenes exchanges with the heads of state attending the top-level global assembly.
According to the filmmakers, Shenk and Richard Berge will also be in Malé for the premiere. After the Maldives premiere of the film, the International Film Festival of India in Goa will present its Indian premiere.
The Island President is a co-production of AfterImage Public Media and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), in association with Actual Films and Impact Partners, with major funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Ford Foundation, John D. and The Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The Atlantic Philanthropies, and the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund.
