Dusit Thani Maldives leads the way for arts and culture with “Call of the Sangu”
Maldives.net.mv – Amidst the most ostentatious celebrations of bringing the essence of Maldivian culture on its shores by any resort, Dusit Thani Maldives takes pride in announcing one-of-its kind Arts and Cultural Precinct, namely “Call Of the Sangu”. This first ever in Maldives resort-based staged Cultural and Arts Precinct was flagged off with an opening festival from 20-22 April 2014, marking a new chapter in the realm of infusing culture, heritage and art forms as an additional fabric of the resort.
Dusit Thani Maldives bring forward the unique concept of inviting its guests to explore and experience the richness of Maldivian culture through Call of Sangu. Guests can now get inspired by varied local art forms and can appreciate the visual and the performing, the dying and the thriving, a fusion of the traditional and the contemporary artistic impressionism that will remain as a permanent and an integral feature of the guest activities at the resort.
Call of Sangu kicked off on an auspicious note with the blowing of Sangu (triton) on the morning of 20 April. This was followed by the maiden legacy of arts and craft market at the resort presenting handicrafts and artwork encompassing lacquer work, jewellery made from coconut shells, and ornamental dhoni (boat). Celebrated international sand artist Afu (Afzal Shaafiu) graced the ocassion with his presence and enthralled the guests with his profound talent through live contemporary sand art performance, shedding light on epic Maldivian tales customs and traditions.
Guests witnessed the opening ceremony of this cultural extravaganza with the cutting of ribbon by Desmond Hatton, General Manager, Dusit Thani Maldives among other dignitaries staying at the resort. It was an atmosphere replete with pride and enthusiasm of bringing the culture of Maldives to the resort at the back drop of boduberu (traditional drumming) performers. According to Thanos Lionsatos, Director of Sales & Marketing, Dusit Thani Maldives, “Culture matters. That’s why it holds a unique place in our hearts. Call of Sangu will leave ever lasting impressions in our guests’ mind and hearts and will become one more reason to see our guests at our shores often.”

Afu added “It is simply an inspiring event for everyone including guests, artists and the resort which strikes a perfect harmony in exposing the beauty of Maldivian art and culture”.
Renowned Maldivian artist Mariyam Shany Ahmed (Manje), demonstrated an illustrative exploration into the world of fantasy and mythology through her live interactive painting performance. Guests attended her show in big numbers and were ever seen interacting with her and Afu during the post afternoon painting workshops organized for both kids and adults staying at the resort.
It is envisaged that Call of Sangu-Arts & Cultural Precinct will leave our guests spellbound with the most cherished memories of this cultural treat whilst their stay at Dusit Thani Maldives. So, come and be a part of this whole new world of arts and culture awaiting exploration.
