Maldives elects a new president

Maldives.net.mv – Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been sworn in as the 6th President of the Republic of Maldives. The President took his oath of office at the Special Assembly held at Dharubaaruge at 1.00 this afternoon. The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain.

After the President was sworn-in, he was greeted with a 21-gun salute, which was followed by the playing of the National Anthem. Afterwards, the President signed the oath. The Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain and the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mr Abdulla Shahid also signed the oath.

Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed was also sworn in as the Vice President of the Maldives at the Assembly. The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain. The Vice President signed the oath thereafter. The Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain and the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mr Abdulla Shahid also signed the oath.

Yaamin Abdul Gayoom secured 51.4 percent of the vote on Saturday, winning over Mohamed Nasheed, who won 48.6 percent of ballots cast.
