uMaldives.net.mv – Taking care of the environment and the beautiful turquoise sea at Maldives is prime responsibility of all who are located on the beautiful island resort – Vivanta by Taj – Coral Reef, Maldives. As a part of their commitment to ensure safe and great snorkeling and diving experience, the team of Vivanta by Taj – Coral Reef, Maldives, participated in the green fins program and has become the first resort in the North Malé Atoll to receive Green Fins Certification. This is the 2nd year that the resort has been certified consecutively for 2015 and now from 1st January 2016.
The certification confirms that the resort has participated in Green Fins training on environmentally friendly diving and snorkeling, and has undergone an assessment of compliance with the Green Fins Code of Conduct.
Green Fins is a program run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Reef-World Foundation and is managed in Maldives by a national team led by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
Maldives is amongst the world’s premier diving destinations, with an abundance of white sand beaches, coral reefs and clear warm waters. Many visitors to the islands are there specifically for scuba diving and snorkeling. Resort have thier own house reef, blue lagoon sandbank and a dedicated shipwreck, which are the main attractions and also a part of Vivanta Motifs.
Taking care of the environment is a culture of the resort and various activities are conducted to involve associates and guests to create awareness and to understand the environment we live in. Resort tends the reef very carefully and have a Coral Rejuvenation project to support, monitor and sustain the prevention of Maldivian coral reefs.
Resort recently had their 5th Coral Rejuvenation project on 21st December 2015, where loose coral fragments, which were likely to die off were collected from the sea and tied to multiple nursery tables. The project included the Resort Associates as well as guests who dived to the location. Resort delighted to be receiving the Green Fins certification and special congratulations go to the team of the resort and the dive centre, Diving & Sailing, based on the island.
Green Fins promotes environmental stewardship within the diving and snorkeling industry by providing incentives and guidance for businesses to comply with environmental standards. Green Fins believes that while diving does present a risk to the environment, if it is done responsibly it is an extremely powerful tool for environmental protection by educating and raising awareness to marine conservation.
Along with Maldives, the organization is also active in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Cellar of quiet distinction: Vakkaru Reserve wins fifth Wine Spectator Award

At Vakkaru Maldives, wine isn’t merely served — it is curated, conversed with, and quietly revered. This has led to the resort’s European wine cellar, Vakkaru Reserve, being awarded Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence for the fifth year — the only resort in the Maldives to have done so.
Vakkaru Reserve, an intimate, striking space at the heart of the island, houses 620 labels selected with care by Head Sommelier Retheesh Kakkareth Mohanan and Assistant Sommelier Vasantha Kumar Nadarajah. Some stars in the collection favour narrative as much as provenance: a Château Cheval Blanc Premier Grand Cru Classé A trio from 1983, 1985 and 1990; Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 2009; Krug Clos du Mesnil Blanc de Blanc Brut 2002 and Château Pavie 1982, each one a vignette of a time and place, waiting to be uncorked.
“Our intention with Vakkaru Reserve has never been to impress with excess,” says Teddy Susanto Wiryawan, General Manager of Vakkaru Maldives. “Instead, it’s about assembling a collection that invites reflection, wines that linger in the mind as much as on the palate. This fifth award is not a milestone, but a reminder to keep listening to winemakers, regions, and the guests who come here seeking something they can’t find elsewhere.”
In a setting where time is allowed to stretch and the pace remains unhurried, the wine experience is naturally immersive. Vakkaru’s cellar hosts guided tastings, bespoke pairings, and a distinctive offering — a Wine & Chocolate Pairing Experience, where artisanal chocolates crafted in-house are paired with wine labels in unexpected harmony. Think Yuzu and Matcha Bonbon with Sauvignon Blanc, or an Espresso Bonbon set against a Tawny Port, delicious, deliberate acts of indulgence.
Vakkaru Reserve remains a quiet benchmark for those who appreciate depth over display. In this place of timelessness, let your wine journey stand less on ceremony, and more on memory and discovery.
