Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort to host eco-experiences to mark World Oceans Month

Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort has invited guests to join Outrigger Resorts’ global celebration during World Oceans Month and participate in numerous eco-experiences as part of its ocean conservation programme, OZONE (Outrigger’s ZONE).

Each year, World Oceans Month in June calls attention to the vital role the sea plays in our everyday lives and serves as a reminder for global citizens to take an active role in fighting for the sustainable future of our oceans, “the lungs of the Earth.”

At Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort, guests of all ages are invited to coral reef conversation workshops conducted by Outrigger’s resident marine biologist, where they can even take part in the creation of new coral planting. Alongside, to support this year’s World Ocean Day’s theme of elimination of plastic waste, guests can also join the snorkelling or diving against debris and come to the marine talk followed by the documentary “A Plastic Ocean” to raise awareness.

Coral reefs are amongst the most diverse ecosystems on the plant, and while they are only found in less than one percent of the world’s oceans, they are home to 25 percent of all marine life. They also protect coastlines from waves and provide food and livelihood to coastal communities. A study published in 2017 found the global reef tourism industry alone is worth around $36 billion (Marine Policy, 2017).

However, coral reefs are in great danger. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), even the most protected coral reefs have experienced bleaching, with scientists warning that US reefs are on course to largely disappear within just a few decades due to global warming. Since 2014, coral bleaching has shifted on a global scale to both the northern and southern hemispheres, affecting close to 70 percent of the world’s total reef population.

In response to this direct threat from climate change, land-based pollution and unsustainable fishing, Outrigger launched the OZONE conservation initiative to encourage guests to become a part of the solution.

“Caring for the planet is part of Outrigger’s DNA. We believe in creating a strong sense of place for our guests and that includes the oceans surrounding the iconic destinations of our beachfront properties,” Monica Salter, vice president of corporate communications for Outrigger Enterprises Group, was quoted in a statement, as saying.

“Our resort hosts put Outrigger’s conservation mission into action each day by educating guests through our OZONE program and participating in green initiatives and volunteer projects throughout local communities. With our guests’ help, Outrigger has surpassed its goal to grow and protect 100 football fields’ worth of coral, and we are proud to continue our OZONE endeavours by providing travellers and locals alike with eco-friendly, educational and impactful experiences during each visit.”

The private island of Konotta is located 340 kilometres to the south of capital Male, and is conveniently accessible via a 55-minute flight from the main Velana International Airport to Kaadedhdhoo Airport followed by a scenic 30-minute journey on a luxurious private yacht.

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has announced the return of Manta Month this September, following the success of last year’s initiative. Now established as an annual programme, the celebration offers guests of all ages the opportunity to engage with the ocean while supporting marine conservation, with a particular focus on the manta ray.

Throughout the month, guests are invited to take part in guided excursions to known manta hotspots, led by the resort’s experienced team, who share insights into manta behaviour and conservation. Awareness talks highlight the story of a manta rescued near the island, serving as a reminder of the resort’s continuing efforts to protect marine life. Children can enjoy manta-themed arts and crafts as well as beach games, while the wider community will join reef and island clean-up activities, with collected waste repurposed into manta sculptures. In addition, proceeds from manta pendant sales at the resort’s retail boutique will be donated to The Manta Trust, extending support for research and protection initiatives.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island achieves PADI Eco Center Certification

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has been officially certified as a PADI Eco Center, becoming one of only two resorts in the Maldives to receive this recognition in 2025. The certification is awarded to dive resorts that extend their efforts beyond standard operations, with a strong focus on protecting marine environments and raising awareness among future generations.

As part of the certification process, the resort’s team adopted the Conrad House Reef through PADI’s Adopt the Blue programme. A Dive Against Debris clean-up dive was conducted around the reef near Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, during which 10 kilograms of marine litter, primarily plastics and metal fragments, were collected.

The team also joined Green Fins in June 2025 and has since introduced a series of sustainable practices. These include paperless dive check-ins, eco-briefings before excursions, reduced use of plastics through the introduction of glass alternatives, and signage encouraging responsible snorkelling and diving across the dive centre.

Guests are also directly engaged in conservation activities through coral restoration initiatives. In 2025, the team has facilitated 17 coral line adoptions, where participants attend an educational session before attaching coral fragments to nursery lines and assisting with their placement underwater.
