AirAsia flies to Maldives
Maldives.net.mv – AirAsia has launched its first ever flights to the Maldives. The inaugural flight was welcomed with by top officials of travel industry and the government.
Malaysian low-cost carrier’s long-haul unit, AirAsia X, will operate four weekly flights to the island nation, via the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Services will operate every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday on a split schedule, departing Kuala Lumpur at either 0920 or 1120 depending on the day.
The new route also marks the start of flights to Colombo from KL, adding to AirAsia’s existing Bangkok-Colombo service.
“We are truly grateful for the support that the government, airport and tourism bodies in Maldives have given us and hope our partnership brings more traffic into Maldives from Sri Lanka and Malaysia in future. Similarly, we hope to increase tourism traffic from Maldives and Sri Lanka into Malaysia,” said Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X. “In addition to our affordable fare offerings, our new Fly Thru destinations for the route would also enable Maldivians to connect seamlessly via our Kuala Lumpur hub to Sydney and Melbourne in Australia and Osaka in Japan. This will further stimulate feeder traffic within the AirAsia X network.”
The AirAsia X’s Fly-Thru service allows guests to easily connect between two different flights via the Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier Terminal without having to worry about checking in twice.

AirAsia X will operate the KL-Colombo-Malé-KL route using its twin-aisle Airbus A330-300 aircraft, which offers 377 seats – 12 in business class and 365 in economy. Ticket prices start from USD 130 for one way to Kuala Lampur from Malé.

Maldives welcomes two million tourists in historic milestone
For the first time in its history, Maldives has reached the milestone of welcoming two million tourists in a single year. This achievement marks a significant moment for the nation’s tourism industry, underscoring its global appeal as a premier travel destination.
The target of two million tourists, set for this year, was officially achieved today. To commemorate the occasion, a special ceremony was held at Velana International Airport, where the landmark visitor was welcomed with fanfare.
The two millionth tourist, Astrid Dirnegger from Austria, arrived in Maldives with her husband and two children. As part of the celebrations, she received a variety of souvenirs and a holiday package from SAii Lagoon Resort, offering her family the opportunity to experience the renowned hospitality and luxury of the Maldives.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the Maldives now hosts an average of more than 6,000 tourists daily, reflecting its sustained popularity among travellers worldwide.
China has emerged as the top source of visitors this year, followed by significant contributions from Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, India, the United States, France, Spain, and Switzerland.
This milestone underscores the Maldives’ position as a leading destination for international tourism, renowned for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and world-class resorts. As the nation celebrates this historic achievement, the tourism sector looks forward to continued growth and success in the coming years.

Sun Siyam Olhuveli inaugurated the highly anticipated AstroFest 2024-2025 with a spectacular Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 21, 2024. The event showcased a unique, spiral-designed Christmas tree constructed from sustainable materials, symbolising the solar system and emphasising the resort’s dedication to sustainability and creativity.
Inspired by the elliptical patterns of the solar system, the tree’s design quickly became a focal point of the celebration. Guests participated in decorating the tree, adding a personal touch that embodied the spirit of unity and the festive season. This collaborative effort marked a memorable beginning to AstroFest, a celebration of the cosmos, innovation, and togetherness.
Mohamed Ali, Director of Operations at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, expressed excitement about the event, stating, “The elliptical design of our tree represents not just the beauty of the cosmos but also our dedication to sustainability and guest engagement.
