3 Maldives (s)Maldives.net.mv – Maldives was showcased at the China Outbound Travel & Tourism Market (COTTM) which was held from 9th to 11th April 2014 in Beijing, China.

COTTM is the only B2B event in China entirely dedicated to the China outbound travel and tourism sector. This is a good promotional platform to access the burgeoning Chinese outbound travel and tourism market.

This year at COTTM, organisers introduced an educational programme open to all exhibitors and visitors. This comprised of Exhibitor Workshops, Exhibitor Presentations and Panel Discussions between industry experts.

In addition, one day before COTTM started, exhibitors were invited to a workshop which offered two key-note presentations by China outbound tourism experts: one on the current situation of China’s Outbound Tourism with the latest on numbers and trends, market segmentation and demand structures and a second one on ways to do business successfully with Chinese partners.

The Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC) together with 54 representatives from 27 companies from the tourism sector were represented at COTTM 2014.  During the three day exhibition, the Maldives delegation met with travel industry professionals and discussed potential future collaborations to promote the Maldives in the Chinese market.

China Tourist Welcome (CTW) Award was also presented during COTTM 2014 on 10th April 2014. The CTW Award has been recognized since 2004 inside and outside China as the most important quality sign for the international Chinese outbound market, with wide coverage in print and electronic media. Starting at ITB in Berlin, since 2007 the CTW Award has been held during COTTM in Beijing. The awards are judged by an International jury including Chinese and non-Chinese tourism experts.

The CTW Award was judged on five categories given below;

  • Product Innovation
  • Internet/Media
  • Service Quality
  • Marketing
  • Overall Performance

Maldives won the Award in the Category of Internet/ Media in Silver during China Tourist Welcome Award 2014. Winning for such awards will raise the high quality image and profile of the destination amongst the Chinese traveller.

China is the number one generating market to the Maldives in terms of arrival. A total of 331,719 tourist arrivals were recorded from China in the year 2013. This is a growth of 44.5% compared to year 2012.  33,213 arrivals were recorded from China in February 2014 contributing 29.5% to the total market share.
