Maldives Gears Up for Next SAARC Summit
Maldives Promotion House – The 17th SAARC summit will be held in the Republic of Maldives from 10th to the 11th of November. The summit is planned to be held in Addu Atoll the southernmost atoll of the Maldives.
According to the president’s office, the summit will be held under the theme of “Building Bridges”. The Maldives as a member state of SAARC had been working with fellow countries to improve communication and collaboration throughout the region.
President’s office representative observed the recent recommencement of ferry service between India and Sri Lanka after 30 years as a physical example of the summits own aims to try and strengthen economic as well as diplomatic ties between different member nations for their mutual benefit and prosperity.
The representative of the President’s office Shauna Aminath further noted that the objective of choosing such a theme this year is to celebrate the differences of the member countries and to use them to unite nations to build a better region.
The 16th SAARC summit was held in Thimpu, Bhutan, issuing two separate declarations on regional cooperation and climate change in late April this year.
Founded in 1985, This year also marks the silver jubilee of the establishment which includes Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
