Radisson Blu Resort Maldives unveils coral nursery

Published

on

Radisson Blu Resort Maldives together with the on-site Dive and Watersport Center, Ocean Group Maldives, has built the resort’s first coral nursery as a form of active reef restoration aimed at conserving coral ecosystem around the resort.

Located in the middle of the resort, just between the main restaurant and Crusoe’s Island, the guests can easily see the newly-built rope nurseries when they swim or snorkel around the area.

The resort’s Marine Biologist, Jessica Miller, says, “We started the coral restoration project in order to help recover some of the surrounding reef, utilizing corals that are more resilient to environmental and anthropogenic stressors, to increase the chances of survival of our reefs.” In the future, guests will be welcomed to adopt a coral line of their own and they will be receiving updates along the journey until we bring it back onto the reef.

“As a Marine Biologist, my job is to educate guests, study marine life, and help conserve the amazing marine ecosystem that the Maldives holds. I am starting from scratch in implementing various marine education and conservation projects.” Jess added.

She has a weekly presentation where she touches on some of the spectacular marine biodiversity that we can find in the Maldives. All the guests are invited to join this presentation accompanied with complimentary cocktails and canapés.

This joint effort is one big step among many activities which will be developed to involve the guests in cherishing and preserving the rich marine life of the Maldives. The resort will continue these efforts with the upcoming creation of a handbook and information plaques about the various type of fish and other marine animals which can be found the around the resort.

Part of the Radisson Hotel Group, Radisson Blu Resort Maldives is nestled in the South Ari Atoll, only 105km from Male’s Velana International Airport. This private island retreat features 128 beachfront or overwater pool villas with up to three bedrooms, seven restaurants and bars, diving and water sports, an overwater spa, yoga pavilion, fitness center, sports court, games room, kids’ club and a glass-walled Event Hall. This makes the resort an ideal setting for all types of holiday, from family vacations and couples’ breaks to weddings and honeymoons.

First green sea turtle hatchlings of season emerge at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort

Published

on

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has recorded its first green sea turtle hatchlings of the season, marking another important milestone in the island’s ongoing marine conservation efforts.

Located in Raa Atoll, Maamunagau is recognised as an important sea turtle nesting site, with 6 nests recorded on the island so far this year. While sea turtles nest throughout the year in the Maldives, June and July typically mark the peak nesting period in Raa Atoll. This season, the recorded nests have primarily belonged to green sea turtles, a species that remains protected in the Maldives.

The first hatchlings of the season emerged naturally on the evening of 22 July, approximately two months after the eggs were laid. Throughout the nesting season, the resort’s Marine Biology team monitors each nest and conducts research activities under approved conservation protocols, collecting valuable data to better understand local sea turtle populations and nesting patterns.

Through its partnership with The Manta Trust and collaboration with conservation partners including the Olive Ridley Project, InterContinental Maldives continues to contribute to marine research and conservation efforts in the Maldives. Each recorded nest provides important insights that support the protection of sea turtles and their habitats for future generations.

Guests are encouraged to experience these special moments responsibly, with hatchlings observed from a dis tance and artificial lighting minimised to allow them to make their natural journey towards the ocean.

As part of its commitment to protecting the surrounding marine environment, InterContinental Maldives continues to support conservation through research, education and responsible wildlife experiences, helping guests connect with the unique ecosystems of the Maldives.

Maldives’ Dhigurah ranked among world’s 10 most valuable beaches

Published

on

Dhigurah in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll has been ranked among the world’s 10 most valuable holiday beaches, with its stretch of sand assigned an estimated value of MVR 2.9 billion (€162.7 million) in a study by luxury villa holiday specialist CV Villas.

The island placed eighth in the global ranking, ahead of Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands and Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The study calculated the hypothetical cost of owning some of the world’s best-known beaches by valuing the sand as coastal land. The figures do not represent sale prices or suggest that the beaches are available for private purchase.

Dhigurah was the only Maldivian beach included in the global top 15. Known for its long sandbank and proximity to whale shark habitats in South Ari Atoll, the inhabited island has become a destination for guesthouse tourism, diving and marine excursions.

Florida’s Siesta Beach topped the global ranking with an estimated value of €1.08 billion, followed by Pampelonne Beach in France at €843 million and Praia da Falésia in Portugal at €573.2 million.

Grace Bay in the Turks and Caicos Islands was ranked fourth at €376.4 million, while Bondi Beach in Sydney completed the top five with an estimated value of €365 million.

Hannah Marshall, luxury travel destination expert and marketing manager at CV Villas, said the research highlighted the role of location in determining coastal land values.

“Everyone has a beach that means something to them, so there’s something fun about seeing what those stretches of sand might be ‘worth’ if you valued them like the land behind them,” Marshall said.

“What comes through is how much location drives the figure: a beach in St-Tropez or on Siesta Key carries a value that a quieter shore — even just as beautiful — simply won’t.”

While Siesta Beach had the highest total estimated value, The Baths on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands recorded the highest value per square metre, at €8,846. Princess Diana Beach in Barbuda was the most affordable beach assessed, at approximately €199 per square metre.
