Taj Exotica Maldives’ innovative energy saving approach wins Tata Group prize

Published

on

An innovative idea on environmental conservation spearheaded by Dulan Bandara, the Director of Engineering at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives, has been recognised at the Tata Group e-Hackathon.

The Tata Group e-Hackathon, hosted in June, focused on finding innovative ways of doing business with minimal impact on people and the planet.

In response to this challenge, Taj Exotica Maldives implemented an innovative solution in the laundry dryer room to bring down power consumption and carbon footprint.

Laundry consists of about 10 per cent of the total power consumption of the resort. The dryers take up at least half of the energy needs of the laundry operations.

The engineering team at Taj Exotica Maldives, led by Bandara, connected the exhaust with fresh air channels, so that the overall heat recovery of the dryers could be increased.

This new approach will result in annual savings of 43,800kwh.

“Heartiest congratulations to the entire team for this fabulous recognition,” an announcement read.

A 15-minute speedboat ride from the Maldives main airport brings you to the idyllic resort of Taj Exotica, surrounded by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean.

Set delicately over the lagoon, this postcard-perfect getaway offers 64 sea-view villas and suites that are luxurious and lavish, yet maintain a fine balance with nature. Featuring private sundecks and balconies, the large villas are decorated with fine wood furnishings and warm colours. The resort’s world-famous, award-winning presidential suite is, arguably, one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Savour the best from the culinary world with carefully selected ingredients sourced both locally and globally to please your palate. Enjoy the freshest of seafood at Deep End or choose from the extensive carefully crafted menu at 24 Degrees, where you experience a performance of art assembled on your plate at the theatrical Teppanyaki kitchen. Sip leisurely on your cocktails at the Equator Bar as you take in the awe-inspiring views of fiery Indian Ocean sunsets.

A wide range of water sports, including diving, fishing and windsurfing are available at Taj Exotica. Alternatively, relax with soothing spa treatments at Jiva Grande Spa.

Since reopening for guests in July after the pandemic-caused lockdown, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives has been welcoming and hosting international guests looking for memorable holidays, with assured safety and protection. With the spirit of Tajness reinvigorated, the resort looks forward to spreading the magic of the Maldives through luxurious hospitality.

Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts Maldives has won three awards at the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2026, with Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives and Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives receiving recognition across three categories.

Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives secured Gold in the Leading Surf Resort category for the eighth time and fourth consecutive year, while Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives retained Gold in the Leading Beach Resort category for the second consecutive year. Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives also received Silver in the Nishan Seneviratne Best CSR Programme category.

The 10th edition of SATA was held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé on 8 October 2026, recognising achievements across South Asia’s tourism and hospitality industry, including guest experiences, industry leadership and responsible tourism.

Located in North Malé Atoll, Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives is home to the Pasta Point surf break, which attracts surfers from around the world. The resort’s eighth Gold award in the Leading Surf Resort category reflects its position among the Maldives’ surfing destinations. In addition to surfing, the resort offers water sports, wellness activities and other guest experiences.

“We remain committed to delivering memorable surf experiences and holidays in the Maldives,” said Marlon Robert, General Manager of Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives.

Robert also acknowledged the continued support of guests, the international surfing community and the resort team in securing the recognition.

Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives received its second consecutive Gold award as Leading Beach Resort in recognition of its island setting, which features sandy beaches, a lagoon and a selection of beachfront and overwater accommodation. The resort also offers dining, wellness and recreational activities, providing guests with opportunities to explore the surrounding marine environment.

The resort’s Silver award in the Nishan Seneviratne Best CSR Programme category recognised its efforts to provide dive education and career development opportunities for young people from neighbouring island communities.

Implemented in partnership with Dive & Sail, the resort’s PADI-certified dive centre, the six-day programme enabled nine students aged between 16 and 18 from schools in Keyodhoo and Felidhoo to obtain PADI Open Water Diver certification.

The programme combined theoretical lessons, practical training and supervised dives to promote safe diving practices and reef conservation. It also introduced participants to potential career opportunities in marine tourism.

“These accolades reflect the dedication of our teams and the continued support of our guests, whose trust inspires us to keep raising the standard of our experiences,” said Sanjeeva Perera, Area General Manager, Cinnamon Maldives Resorts.

The three awards recognise the tourism experiences offered by Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives and Cinnamon Velifushi Maldives, as well as Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ initiatives in environmental awareness and community engagement across its Maldives properties.
