The Tales of a Wishmaster

Maldives Promotion House – Maldives Promotion House has reached out to the far corners of Maldives, to present to you the story of a Maldivian “wishmaster”, Mohamed Arshad Abdulla, from an isolated northern island.

Arshad, who likes to make new friends that have different cultural background, began working in the tourism industry in the customer services area and has worked in the industry for 9 years. He has experienced a total of 6 resorts and currently works at W Retreat & Spa – Maldives, as a Welcome Agent, to accommodate the requests and needs of all guests. During an exclusive interview with Maldives Promotion House, Arshad said that, “since school I have always been interested in hospitality and customer services and that is what introduced me to the industry.”

Arshad said that he joined Kurumba Maldives 9 years ago as a training waiter. Since then he has worked at Soneva Gili by Six Senses, Coco Palm Bodu Hithi, One&Only Reethirah Maldives, Royal Island Resort & Spa, and Hilton Maldives Irufushi Resort and Spa. He currently works at the “Whatever/Whenever” service at W Retreat & Spa – Maldives, providing a unique and innovative service to the tourists at the resort.

Whatever/Whenever is a service provided by W Retreat & Spa – Maldives. As the name suggests the service grants the customers whatever they want whenever they want it, as long as the request remains within the legal limits. “Our Whatever/Whenever service remains within the legal limits. As long as it is legal we do our best to accommodate the request,” Arshad said.

When asked about his feelings towards his employees and where he works, he said that, “It is a great relationship between the company and its employees.” Arshad added that the resort allows him to be creative and to improve his talents. “The W brand itself is the most creative brand of Starwood Hotels and most probably in the entire industry. From the W lifestyle and language, talents are given every opportunity to be creative and show their talented ideas and creativity onstage and offstage,” Arshad said.

Speaking about W Retreat & Spa – Maldives, Arshad expressed his feelings towards the resort saying that, “Starwood has a lot of opportunities for its talents to grow with the company and I see myself leading our award winning Whatever/Whenever team.” Arshad praised W Retreat & Spa – Maldives, and thanked them from the bottom of his heart for the innovation and creativity brought by them to the Maldivian tourism industry.

For the past few years Arshad has continued to work for the tourism industry because of a passion for the work he does. He said that he does not plan on leaving the career. “It is very much satisfying and I think that’s the reason why I have not changed my career. I don’t plan to change my career,” Arshad says. While he holds a SIC in Hotel reception and front office practices he is currently studying for a diploma in International Hotel Services.

During his interview with Maldives Promotion House Arshad also shared his views towards the industry. He believes that the industry has changed a lot over time. “Time has changed a lot of things in the industry. I enjoyed working in different areas of the industry very much and I think that interested me to the concept of W Maldives,” Arshad said. He added that the services and the industry as a whole has developed incredibly, compared to when he first joined the industry.

Arshad further noted his concern saying that the industry needs to produce a more local team. “I think the industry needs to develop its local force to a higher level. Also more efforts are needed to promote and develop the industry to the next level,” Arshad noted.

Arshad also added that he wishes to see more local resorts with the same standards as the international chains. Arshad said that while some services in some resorts are still not up to expectations, the standards are slowly increasing with resorts offering innovative services and designs.
