Huvafen Fushi celebrates World Tourism Day 2014 with lagoon cleaning and canoe races

Huvafen Fushi – World Tourism Day (WTD), celebrated every year on 27 September, is a global observance to highlight tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value.

Embracing this year’s theme – Tourism and Community Development – focusing on the ability of tourism to empower people and provide them with skills to achieve change in their local communities – Huvafen Fushi is inviting guests to join their associates and take to underwater and over water adventures with an afternoon of events, in their efforts to maintain a clean and enjoyable environment for travelers and the local community to enjoy.

Meeting at 3:00pm from FLOAT the resort’s water sports centre, this Saturday guests and associates will learn about clearing debris that comes into the lagoon as flotsam. Common reef cleaning findings in Maldives include rubbish, mainly drink cans, plastic packaging & other plastic items that passing boats unload either intentionally or by accident. Following this, canoe races will be held in the lagoon to enjoy the beauty, fun and excitement of the destination, rounded off with complimentary Champagne and Magnum ice-cream as the sun sets over the north atoll lagoon.
