Maldives to Develop its First Marine Park

Maldives Promotion House – The government recently announced that they have decided to develop the first marine national park of the Maldives. The project has already been contracted to a private party.

The first marine national park of the country would be developed in the reef and marine area of Noon Atoll Edhdhuffaru. Apart from the deep ocean, the park will also include reefs, lagoons and a number of islands as well.

According to local news agency Sun.mv, the project has been contracted to Mohamed Hameed, an islander of Noonu Kudafaree who will undertake it as a promoter. The agreement was signed between him and Ministry of Housing and Environment.

Hameed said that the actual work would be conducted by a voluntary foundation, which would be established soon. The government would hold 51 percent of the shares in the foundation.

He assured that the government would not inject any money into the project, and that all funds would be raised through foreign aid.

Hameed expressed hope that the project would greatly contribute to the development of Noonu Atoll. He also said that programs for environmental research of the area educating, training and creating awareness will begin very soon.
