Daily Flights from Mumbai to Malé
Maldives Promotion House – More flights and ferry connections were discussed during the official talks of the recent visit of Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna’s to the Maldives.
SM Krishna, was in Maldives on a two-day visit, held extensive talks with his counterpart Ahmed Naseem, besides meeting Defence and National Security Minister Thohath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, Home Minister Hassan Afeef, Economic Development Minister Mahmood Razee and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Aslam Shakir.
During the talks, more flight links and ferry services between the two countries was discussed. The two sides have already decided to soon launch a ferry service to connect Kochi in Kerala with Malé as part of efforts to improve connectivity. Officials said earlier that expressions of interest have already been invited for the ferry service, which will have all facilities available in a cruise.
A daily direct flight between Mumbai and Malé has also been finalised. They said Civil Aviation Ministry has approved the proposal for a direct daily flight between Mumbai and Malé. According to sources, Kingfisher Airlines was likely to operate the daily flight.
Maldives is currently connected to Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) with daily flights by Air India and Maldivian. Air India also operates daily flights from Bangaluru (Bangalore) to Malé. Further connections are also available from Sri Lankan via Colombo.
During 2010 Maldives welcomed 25,756 tourists from India with a 62.5 percent growth compared to 2009. After lowering Korea to the fourth place, India has become the third most important market in Asia for Maldives, after China and Japan.
