Maldives.net.mv – Universal Resorts has announced the opening of Kandolhu Island, Maldives.

Set to welcome its first guests on January 11, 2014, Kandolhu is a small lush island, ringed by an intricate yet stunning coral garden. Intimate and bare, this tiny gem is encircled with wide beaches that are veiled by the emerald green ocean that Maldives is known for.

Following an investment of US$ 12 million, the island will feature just 30 rooms in 5 different categories, both on land and over the water. Located in the heart of the Maldives, in North Ari Atoll, the island can be reached by a 20 minutes seaplane.

Though it is designed to 5 star levels, the island will focus more on giving its guests an “island experience” instead of a typical stay at a hotel. Small and perfectly formed, this island will give you a real Maldivian experience with no restrictions. Guests can walk around the island barefoot in just minutes and snorkel one of the best house reefs in the Maldives, rich in both coral and fish life, and easily accessible from the island. You can choose to go on bed and breakfast, and plan your day as you go, or you can book full board and have access to various à la carte restaurants on the island – or indulge in luxury, Kandolhu style, by going all inclusive where you will be set for your entire stay.

Facilities available on the island include 4 restaurants, 1 bar, spa with 4 treatment rooms, diving, non- motorised water sports, excursions and a fitness room.

General Manager, Abdul Latheef describes Kandolhu as “…something very unique for the Maldives, where islands of this size is very rare. This will be an experience that will offer a Maldives, that is not typically seen by the numerous tourists that visit our island nation. Kandolhu is the perfect combination of “small island Maldives” and affordable luxury. It is an island that will make you feel like Robinson Crusoe, just with several luxuries at your disposal. It is an island where you go to find quietude and peace, and it is an island on which you will have absolute time alone with your loved one.”

Maldives’ first island-to-island zipline receives global excellence award

Published

Zipline Maldives, the first island-to-island zipline in the Maldives, has received the Global Excellence Award for “World’s Most Beautiful Zipline – Maldives” at the Global Brand Awards 2026.

The recognition was presented as part of Season 2 of the Global Brand Awards, Sri Lanka Chapter. The certificate of achievement was presented to Ibrahim Asim of Vahmaafushi Picnic Island, recognising the project’s contribution and performance.

Located in South Malé Atoll, Zipline Maldives connects Maafushi with neighbouring Vahmaafushi, taking riders across 428 metres of open ocean between the two islands. The attraction, which opened earlier this year, introduced an island-to-island zipline experience to the Maldives and has added a new adventure tourism offering to the country’s local island sector.

The ride takes approximately 45 to 60 seconds and operates on two parallel lines, allowing two people to travel side by side. According to Zipline Maldives, more than 2,000 riders from over 50 countries have used the attraction since its launch.

The experience begins in Maafushi and crosses the lagoon to Vahmaafushi. A standard booking includes the 428-metre zipline ride, safety briefing and equipment, a return speedboat transfer, a welcome drink and access to Vahmaafushi Island. The attraction is open to riders aged six and above, subject to a weight range of 40 to 110 kilograms and operating conditions.

Vahmaafushi was developed as an experience-focused island close to Maafushi, combining the zipline with beach visits, dining, private celebrations and other island activities. Located around two minutes from Maafushi by boat, the island forms part of efforts to expand the range of experiences available to visitors staying in one of the Maldives’ largest local tourism destinations.

The zipline was introduced commercially in May 2026, with its operators positioning the over-ocean crossing as a new attraction for tourists and residents. Its location near Maafushi also allows visitors staying in the wider South Malé Atoll area to incorporate the activity into day excursions.

The Global Excellence Award marks an international recognition for the attraction within months of its opening, as local tourism operators continue to introduce experience-based activities alongside the Maldives’ established accommodation and marine tourism offerings.

Fresh from being named Best Honeymoon Destination in 2025, Sun Siyam Iru Veli was recognised as Best Wedding Destination at the Travel Trade Maldives Awards & Gala 2026, held at Crossroads Maldives on 27 August. The award further reinforces the resort’s commitment to celebrating romance in all its forms.

Surrounded by turquoise lagoons and white-sand beaches, Iru Veli provides a natural setting for couples seeking an intimate island retreat. Every villa features a private pool, while secluded beaches, private sandbanks and a 24-hour all-inclusive dine-around experience offer guests privacy and flexibility throughout their stay.

The resort hosts celebrations of different scales, ranging from barefoot ceremonies by the ocean to larger events encompassing the entire island. Dedicated wedding planners work closely with each couple to personalise every element, ensuring that both the ceremony and the wider stay reflect their individual story.

This flexibility extends beyond the resort’s wedding packages. Simple Romance, Grand Gesture and Sandbank Magic provide couples with a starting point, with each celebration customisable through décor, dining, wellness, entertainment and island experiences. For occasions requiring complete exclusivity, full-island buyouts allow the resort experience to be tailored around the couple and their guests.

The celebrations can continue beyond the ceremony through candlelit dinners beneath the stars, spa rituals for two, sunset cruises and time spent together across the island. These experiences enable couples to shape the occasion around their preferences, with personal moments unfolding throughout their stay.

“Every couple arrives with a different story and a different vision for their celebration. There is no template here. From intimate ceremonies for two to full-island celebrations with family and friends, our role is to create moments that feel completely personal. That is exactly what our team does. They listen first and then create a ceremony that truly reflects the couple. This award is a testament to the dedication and care they put into making every moment memorable,” said Masdhooq Saeed, Cluster General Manager of Sun Siyam Iru Veli and Sun Siyam Vilu Reef.

The annual TTM Awards & Gala brings together travel professionals and hoteliers to recognise achievements across the Maldivian hospitality industry. Iru Veli’s latest award further strengthens its position among the Maldives’ leading destinations for weddings and romantic escapes.
