Fifty years ago, Apollo 11 landed on the moon and astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped down from their lunar module onto the surface of the moon, the first humans in history to do so.

On July 20, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas will commemorate the 50th anniversary of man’s first walk on the moon with ‘The Eagle Has Landed Celebration.’

An astronomer’s paradise, Baa atoll is one of the best places on earth to enjoy moon and stargazing. Its proximity to the equator and its non-polluted skies means both hemisphere’s stars are clearly visible from the resort.

SKY, the Maldives’ first and only overwater observatory features a research-grade 16” Meade LX200 telescope. The custom-built Ash-dome observatory sits on the roof deck of the resort’s Sky Bar, surrounded by nothing but open skies and the ocean waves below.

The resort’s resident Sky Guru, Ali Shameem, a native Maldivian who grew up on an island without electricity, spent his childhood mapping the constellations. A protégé of Italian astronomer Dr Massimo Tarenghi, Shameem has spent the last decade observing the stars as a professional astronomer. He shares his passion and expertise of the constellations in weekly star gazing experiences for the resort’s guests.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon walk, guests are invited to join Shameem for a ‘Star Gazing’ breakfast with an early start of 4am. Lay back to gaze at the stars that glitter overhead, and be regaled by Shameem’s knowledge as he takes you on an intergalactic journey before taking a look through the powerful telescope at the craters on the moon that still amaze people 50 years after the first landing.

The Stargazing Breakfast offers guests a unique chance to see the stars in perfect view and greater clarity as the humidity and light pollution are at its minimum during this time. Indulge in a four-course breakfast of chilled Champagne and lobster benedict to accompany your once-in-a-lifetime experience. The price for the experience including breakfast is USD 450 per person.

For guests who like a later start to the day, the SKY bartenders have created a new signature cocktail to mark the occasion – The ‘Buzz’ Aldrin. All on property guests will receive the complimentary cocktail. Whilst it should provide a buzz, there’s no guarantee you’ll experience weightlessness.

Anantara Kihavah is just 35 minutes by seaplane from the main Velana International Airport. Following the scenic flight, guests arrive to a picture-perfect setting surrounded by the jewel-coloured waters and uninhabited islands of the majestic Indian Ocean.

Comprising 75 one-bedroom villas, four two-bedroom residences and a three-bedroom residence, each hideaway boasts large personal infinity-edge pools, dining pavilions, expansive wooden sundecks and ample lounging areas complete with swinging daybeds, hammocks and sun loungers. All villas feature his and hers walk-in wardrobes, rain showers, outdoor showers and over-sized bathtubs big enough for two. Sunken glass bottom bathtubs in the over water villas offer a mesmerising view of the sparkling ocean, both below and beyond the adjacent infinity-edge pool.

Just Veg Festival returns to Atmosphere Kanifushi for fifth anniversary

Atmosphere Kanifushi will mark the fifth anniversary of its Just Veg Festival this October, showcasing once again that plant-based cuisine can be both inventive and memorable.

The festival, taking place from 3 to 9 October 2025, will feature an exclusive ‘Just Veg Festive’ dinner menu curated by Italian chef Fabrizio Marino. The Tuscan chef, recognised for elevating vegan and vegetarian fine dining, is known for his creative approach that transforms fruits, vegetables, and herbs into refined culinary experiences.

Chef Fabrizio’s menu will be complemented by vintages from five wine partners. New to this year’s line-up is Bottega SpA, Italy’s award-winning winery, which will present its wines alongside three artisanal Grappas. Returning partners include Champagne Guy Charbaut, Bodegas Viñátigo, Glenelly Estate, and Martín Códax, offering a broad selection to pair with the dishes.

“Food should thrill you. It should challenge what you think you know,” commented Chef Fabrizio. “It is a privilege to share my culinary philosophy in such a remarkable setting.
