Hurawalhi Maldives has appointed Brad Calder as its new General Manager, with the additional task of overseeing the pre-opening of its upcoming private island retreat.

In an announcement, the recently-opened luxury resort described Brad, who hails from the New Zealand city of Auckland, as a detailed, result-driven and perceptive professional with extensive experience in luxury resort management, product innovation and development. He has an ambitious vision, which will usher in a new array of unique and effortless luxury experiences at one of the Maldives’ rising star resorts, it said.

“The potential is enormous. I am certain we can successfully compete with many of the bigger brands that are present in the Maldives and establish Hurawalhi’s reputation as an iconic and top-ranking resort in the country,” Brad was quoted in the announcement, as saying.

“There are several attributes that allow Hurawalhi to elevate its profile: the adults-only concept, luxury all-inclusive package that will be further developed, 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, Dream Island and of course the sustainable practices used to maintain the pristine environment.”

According to the new General Manager, Hurawalhi is lucky to have environmental technology and several eco-friendly practices in place, making it a draw to those guests whose holiday requirements include sustainable luxury and responsible travel.

“What also needs mentioning as it impressed me the most upon my arrival is the genuine warmth of hospitality presented by the team, and the stunning natural environment with the clearest water and the abundance of marine life,” he said.

In addition to managing Hurawalhi, Brad will also oversee the pre-opening and management of Kudadoo Maldives Private Island by Hurawalhi, which is set to open in early summer 2018.

Brad started his professional career as the Food and Beverage Manager at the iconic Home House Private Members Club in London, and later went onto become the Food and Beverage Manager at Stamford Plaza Auckland, Director of Food and Beverage at Warwick Resort and Spa Fiji, and Executive Assistant Manager at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali. Before joining Hurawalhi, he was the Resort Manager at the award-winning Gili Lankanfushi resort in the Maldives.

Officially inaugurated in January, the five-star Hurawalhi resort is accessible by a 40-minute scenic seaplane flight from the main Velana International Airport, and offers 90 villas, including 60 Ocean Villas and 30 Beach Villas for grown-ups who are seeking luxury and innovation. The villas are stylishly and beautifully conceived featuring soothing décor, sumptuous linens on king size beds, bleached wooden floors, and private terraces with panoramic views.

The Chongqing-Male route, scheduled three times a week, is expected to strengthen the bonds between China and the Maldives, opening up exciting new opportunities for tourism and cultural exchange.

The inaugural flight was welcomed upon its arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA) in Maldives, where local officials and tourism representatives expressed their enthusiasm for this new development.

China, being the largest source market for Maldives tourism before the pandemic, saw a resumption of tourist arrivals from January 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. In 2023, the Maldives welcomed 187,118 Chinese tourists, marking a significant recovery in numbers.
