Fushifaru Maldives announces MMA retreat with One Championship Fighter Saiful Merican, Maldivian Muay Thai Trainer Kai
Fushifaru Maldives has announced its first MMA Retreat in collaboration with professional MMA/ Muay Thai and ONE Championship fighter Saiful Merican, and Maldivian Muay Thai trainer and Fushifaru Wellness Guru Kai.
As part of the retreat from June 19-21, renowned ONE Championship fighter and former World No.1 Muay Thai kickboxer (57KG) Saiful Merican will be bringing his ring-ready techniques and drills to the island for guests to sign up and test their strength, stamina and agility on the beach.
Joining him will be Maldivian expert trainer Kai, who will be bringing her signature brand of strength conditioning and training to the retreat. A certified trainer for over ten years, Kai has participated in various sporting events, conducts her own bootcamp in the Maldives and retreats around the world, including running a marathon barefoot in Athens.
Mixed Martial Arts, or more popularly known as MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. It encompasses both stand-up and ground skills using techniques from various other martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, Muay Thai, Sanda and many more.
As the Vice President of the Malaysian MMA Association (MASMMA), Saiful is one of the country’s pioneer professional MMA fighters. He transitioned to MMA in 2013 after competing in hundreds of Muay Thai fights from the tender age of 11.
“I wanted to test myself and keep learning other disciplines. MMA workouts challenge your mind and body to push yourself to its limits,” says Saiful.
Fushifaru’s Very Important Kids (VIKs) will not be left out on this retreat.
Kids aged from 6-12 can join the MMA Kids Retreat to learn and adopt a great active and healthy lifestyle through mixed martial arts. Not only will they learn self confidence and discipline, they will have fun doing it. Fushifaru’s Family Fantastic Offer where up to two kids under the age of 12 stay and eat for free on the same board basis as their parents, would be the perfect reason to book.
Fushifaru’s MMA Retreat package starts from:
- USD 1,399 per person for three nights, and includes a daily one hour MMA session, three 60 minute spa treatments, a daily detox juice and a Fighter’s Diet Menu.
- USD 1,991 per person for five nights, and includes a daily one hour MMA session, three 60 minute spa treatments, a daily detox juice and a Fighter’s Diet Menu.
Located on the far North East border of Lhaviyani atoll, the exquisite little island of Fushifaru is home to an extraordinary landscape above and below the waterline. With ‘Fushi’ meaning ‘island’ and ‘Faru’ meaning ‘reef’ in the local Dhivehi language, this boutique Maldivian chic island is the perfect getaway for a digital detox and a little soul searching.
With 49 beach and water villas that exude luxurious coziness with carefully selected amenities, choose from 18 beach villas with private plunge pools, 26 beach villas and five water villas. Each features stunning outdoor bathrooms, large outdoor decking, 43” IPTV, Egyptian-cotton linen and 24-hour personalised Resident service.
Fushifaru has three food and beverage outlets that will take guests on a gastronomic journey starting at Korakali for an international breakfast, lunch and dinner, while Raakani Grill showcases signature Asian recipes with a focus on the finest local seafood. Fanihandhi Bar is perfect for catching some sun with a cocktail in hand or unwinding to a famous Maldivian sunset.
Heylhi Spa has five-treatment rooms or sanctuaries that embody the spirit of rejuvenation; a concept inspired by the Cleaner Wrasse fish found commonly throughout the island’s reef. Designed with lush, green surroundings, the spa echoes its name Heylhi, which in Dhivehi refers to jungle-like vegetation found at the shoreline. Each treatment room resembles traditional Maldivian cottages, complete with outdoor garden bathrooms.
From a state-of-the-art gym and multi-sports court, to paddle boarding, snorkelling, diving and semi-submarine expeditions, activities are endless at Fushifaru. For an insight into coral rehabilitation and marine education, a resident marine biologist is on hand to share lessons on conservation and conduct guided snorkelling tours around the island and nearby reefs.

Dive into conservation: Sun Siyam Iru Fushi introduces snorkelling with a purpose
Sun Siyam Iru Fushi has introduced an exciting new activity for ocean enthusiasts: Conservation Snorkelling. Led by the resort’s resident marine biologist, Mohamed Shah, this immersive experience allows participants to contribute to marine conservation efforts while exploring the vibrant underwater ecosystem of the Maldives. Combining education, exploration, and action, the initiative offers an enriching opportunity for visitors of all ages.
Participants engage in collecting critical data on coral health and fish populations using underwater fish guides, coral health charts, and writing slates, while learning to identify various fish species. They assess reef conditions and contribute to the protection of the local marine environment. The findings are then discussed with Mohamed Shah, providing deeper insights into the marine life of the Iru Fushi lagoon and house reef.
This activity is a key component of Sun Siyam Cares, the resort’s initiative focused on environmental protection and community support. Families, young couples, and other guests can participate in global conservation efforts through the Coral Watch citizen science project. The activity is open to strong swimmers aged eight and above who feel comfortable snorkelling.
“At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, we strive to protect the stunning natural environment around us,” said Abdullah Atham, Resort Manager. “Through activities like Conservation Snorkelling, we encourage guests to explore and actively contribute to ocean conservation.”
