MAHRP hosts first National HR Convention with over 400 participants

Maldives Association of Human Resource Professionals (MAHRP) has successfully hosted the first ever National HR Convention and EXPO with the participation of over 400 HR professionals from the Maldives.

Endorsed by the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) of Sri Lanka and World HRD Congress of India, the largest gathering of HR professionals in the Maldives took place from March 4-5, 2019 at the main convention centre of Dharubaaruge in capital Male.

Aimed to provide transformational experiences for all speakers and participations, the National HR Convention and EXPO 2019 became the ultimate platform to feature the latest HR innovations, strategies, insights, and domestic and international best practices by the most influential and respected HR leaders, speakers and practitioners from the Maldives and the region. The expo featured various services and solutions for managing day-to-day HR practices and functions within organisations.

The theme for the inaugural edition of the convention was, “Future of HR and Work”. Keynote speakers and other presenters shared best practices and highlights covering four main areas: Talent Development and Culture, Employee Wellness and Engagement, Innovation and Digitalisation in HR Practices, and HR as a Business Partner and Future of Work.

Amongst the six keynote addresses, Avi Liran, Chief Delighting Officer at Delivering Delights, spoke on the topic of ‘Creating Delightful HR Experiences’, whilst Jerome Joseph, Chief Delighting Officer and CEO at Brand Theater, touched upon the concept of ‘Internal Branding and Employee Experience’. Founder and Chairman of World HRD Congress Dr RL Bhatia, Head of Research and Thought Leadership at CIPD Edward Houghton, President of Asia Professional Speakers Association Fredrik Haren, and author and speaker Su Patel also delivered keynote addresses on the topic of ‘Further of HR and Work’.

Twenty presentations and speeches were delivered on a range of topics, including ‘HR Innovation and Digitalisation’, ‘Talent Development and Culture’, ‘Future of Work and HR in Hospitality World’, and ‘Future of Work and Data’. Speakers and presenters include some of the most well-known names in the local HR professionals network:

  • Ibrahim Inaz, Resort Manager at S Resorts & Hotels
  • Adam Naseer, Director Technical Services at Auditor General’s Office
  • Ali Adam, Manager Human Resources at Universal Enterprises
  • Dr Ahmed Shahid, Dean of Faculty of Research at Villa College
  • Hassan Saeed, Resort Manager at Dhigali Maldives

During the two-day convention, two panel discussions took place on the topics of ‘HR as a Business Partner’ and ‘Employee Wellness and Engagement’. Panelists include Head of HR Business Partner at Bank of Maldives Ahmed Ibrahim, Cluster Director of HR at S Hotels & Resorts Aminath Shaly, Director of Human Resources at Villa Shipping & Trading Ibrahim Moosa, and Speaker and Trainer at Empowering All Masood Ali.

“This is the first time an event of this magnitude is carried out in the Maldives. Despite being the inaugural event, we were able to gather over 400 HR professionals and leaders. This represents the need for such training and events amongst the HR professionals network in the Maldives,” MAHRP President Hussain Afeef, who also serves as the Regional Director of Training, Development and Quality Assurance at LUX* Resorts, said.

MAHRP is the first professional association registered in the Maldives, dedicated to human resources and people development.

The association’s mission is to serve the needs of HR professionals by providing the most current and comprehensive resources, and to advance the profession by promoting HR’s essential values, setting professional standards and providing the know-how. It is committed to linking and connecting HR professionals and practitioners locally and oversees through signature events and membership activities.

As part of its aim to develop human resources, MAHRP regularly hosts knowledge share events. The association also organised an exclusive training event in Maldives with world’s leading customer experience consultant Ron Kaufman.

MAHRP’s main focus for 2019 is identifying key challenges in human capital development and work towards adding value to every aspect of HR throughout the country. This includes a series of activities, including HR knowledge share, best practice share, HR organisational level quizzes, HR convention and debate sessions, as well as inspirational talks with world-class speakers.

Maldives celebrates arrival of 2024’s 1 millionth tourist

Maldives on Thursday welcomed the one millionth tourist to visit this year.

The one millionth tourist is a Thai named Sutapa Amonwivat, who arrived from Singapore with her husband and two children. This is her second visit to Maldives.

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the Ministry of Tourism gave a warm welcome to Sutapa at the Velana International Airport (VIA) Thursday afternoon. She was welcomed at the VIA by tourism minister Ibrahim Faisal, MMPRC Managing Director Ibrahim Shiury and senior officials of various relevant agencies.

After welcoming her with traditional offerings, she was presented with various gifts by the ministry, MMPRC, customs, immigration, Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA).

Maldives reached one million tourists in June, three weeks earlier than last year. The number of tourists reached one million on July 16, 2023.

Maldives expects to reach 2 million tourists this year.

New air route connects Chongqing to Maldives

Chongqing Airlines on Monday began its inaugural flights to Maldives.

The Chongqing-Male route, scheduled three times a week, is expected to strengthen the bonds between China and the Maldives, opening up exciting new opportunities for tourism and cultural exchange.

The inaugural flight was welcomed upon its arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA) in Maldives, where local officials and tourism representatives expressed their enthusiasm for this new development.

“We warmly welcome our friends from China to our beautiful islands. This new connection strengthens our bonds and opens up new opportunities for tourism,” the tourism ministry said on X.

Maldives currently welcomes four airlines from China, including China Eastern, Beijing Capital Airlines, Xiamen Airlines.

In January, Maldives government urged tourism stakeholders in both Maldives and China to ramp up efforts to restore China’s position as the primary source market for Maldives tourism, a status held before the onset of Covid-19.

China, being the largest source market for Maldives tourism before the pandemic, saw a resumption of tourist arrivals from January 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. In 2023, the Maldives welcomed 187,118 Chinese tourists, marking a significant recovery in numbers. This year, the Maldives has welcomed the most number of tourists from China, with over 107,940 or 11.5 percent of total arrivals by June 12.
