Volvo Ocean Race Sets Sail From Maldives

Maldives Promotion House– It’s a typical hot and humid day in the capital city Malé with little wind, and the Volvo Ocean Yacht Race has set sail from Maldives. The start line has been laid between the race committee boat and a small island off Malé. With around five to six knots of wind, the six yachts took off from Hulhumalé one of the island districts of the capital male, heading towards Sanya, china.

The race is now in the second part of the third leg of the event. On January 14th five boats competed in the first part of the third leg in United Arab Emirates, sailing from Abu Dhabi to Sharjah. The boats were loaded on an armed ship and transferred to Maldives, in an attempt to avoid threats of pirates.

Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 began in October from Spain, and will sail over 39,000 nautical miles over the course of nine months. Each competing vessel has a sailing team of 11 professionals.
