GM Forum to bring together Maldives’ leading hoteliers

Leading hotel industry professionals are set to meet next month at the largest annual gathering of general managers and hospitality industry stakeholders in Maldives.

Organised by local hospitality industry publication Hotelier Maldives, the second edition of GM Forum would take place on April 19 in Hulhulé Island Hotel (HIH), and would feature Hussain ‘Champa’ Afeef, a tourism industry pioneer and Chairman of Crown Company, and Jesper Palmqvist, Area Director for the Asia Pacific Region at STR Global, as keynote speakers.

Palmqvist would also give a presentation delving deeply into data on the Maldives – both recent and long term – to understand the main key performance indicators, and supply and demand balance, and compare that to other relevant markets. He would also look into profit and loss data to foresee a profitability performance comparison, and analyse what lies ahead for the country’s hospitality industry with regard to its performance over the past two years.

At the summit, Mohamed Solah, Manager, Infrastructure Development at Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), and Mohamed Shahdy Anwar, Senior Counsel at Suood Anwar and Co. LLP, would give presentations.

This year’s forum would also include panel discussions facilitated by general managers focusing on employment law, sustainability in resort management, importance of reinvesting in properties, new openings, and destination marketing. The panels would also be themed around transportation, statistics and forecasting, environment and sustainability.

A total of 46 general managers have confirmed their attendance at the summit, which brings together industry leaders, policymakers, resort operators and owners, and other hospitality industry stakeholders including suppliers. Registration in the GM Forum for general managers expires on March 31; the initial deadline extended due to increased demand for registrations.

World of Outdoor, a Sri Lanka-based provider of outdoor and indoor furniture products and solutions, and Allied Insurance, the leading insurer of the Maldives are Platinum Sponsors of the event, while Evo Home and Sonee Hardware have been confirmed as Gold Sponsors. Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) and Cyprea Card Centre are Silver Sponsors of the annual gathering this year.

The first edition of the GM Forum was held on May 25, 2016, and saw the attendance of over 100 delegates including over 20 general managers.

Maldives celebrates arrival of 2024’s 1 millionth tourist

Maldives on Thursday welcomed the one millionth tourist to visit this year.

The one millionth tourist is a Thai named Sutapa Amonwivat, who arrived from Singapore with her husband and two children. This is her second visit to Maldives.

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the Ministry of Tourism gave a warm welcome to Sutapa at the Velana International Airport (VIA) Thursday afternoon. She was welcomed at the VIA by tourism minister Ibrahim Faisal, MMPRC Managing Director Ibrahim Shiury and senior officials of various relevant agencies.

After welcoming her with traditional offerings, she was presented with various gifts by the ministry, MMPRC, customs, immigration, Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA).

Maldives reached one million tourists in June, three weeks earlier than last year. The number of tourists reached one million on July 16, 2023.

Maldives expects to reach 2 million tourists this year.

New air route connects Chongqing to Maldives

Chongqing Airlines on Monday began its inaugural flights to Maldives.

The Chongqing-Male route, scheduled three times a week, is expected to strengthen the bonds between China and the Maldives, opening up exciting new opportunities for tourism and cultural exchange.

The inaugural flight was welcomed upon its arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA) in Maldives, where local officials and tourism representatives expressed their enthusiasm for this new development.

“We warmly welcome our friends from China to our beautiful islands. This new connection strengthens our bonds and opens up new opportunities for tourism,” the tourism ministry said on X.

Maldives currently welcomes four airlines from China, including China Eastern, Beijing Capital Airlines, Xiamen Airlines.

In January, Maldives government urged tourism stakeholders in both Maldives and China to ramp up efforts to restore China’s position as the primary source market for Maldives tourism, a status held before the onset of Covid-19.

China, being the largest source market for Maldives tourism before the pandemic, saw a resumption of tourist arrivals from January 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. In 2023, the Maldives welcomed 187,118 Chinese tourists, marking a significant recovery in numbers. This year, the Maldives has welcomed the most number of tourists from China, with over 107,940 or 11.5 percent of total arrivals by June 12.
