President and First Lady Departs On Official Trip
Maldives Promotion House – President Mohamed Nasheed and the First Lady Laila Ali, recently departed on an official visit to the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Switzerland.
At the United Kingdom the President is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at an event on climate change, hosted by former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson. She served as the seventh and first female, President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, from 1997 to 2002.
She is widely regarded as a transformative figure in the presidency of Ireland, who revitalised and liberalised a previously conservative, low-profile political office. She resigned the presidency two months ahead of the end of her term of office to take up her post in the United Nations.
In Canada, President Nasheed will attend the world premier of the documentary about the Maldives at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The Island President is a dramatic Hollywood-style feature documentary that lifts the issue of global warming out of the theoretical and into the personal. The 90 minute documentary film highlights the Maldives’ efforts to combat climate change and rising sea levels.
At France the President plans to call on the cabinet ministers and other officials of the French government, to discuss development plans for Maldives. The President will also deliver an address at a special function on Human Rights, in Geneva, organised by the Human Rights Association of UN.
