With this, come certain moral values and celebrations, which may seem to a tourist uncommon. However most of these celebrations and holidays are part of the long cherished beliefs and holds a very important place within the community.

One of these religious festivals is the Eid Ul Adha locally known as Bodu Eid, which will be celebrated for four days. Held yearly according to the Islamic calendar, the Eid Festival marks the end of Hajj or the pilgrimage trip to Mecca by millions of Muslims. The festival is also known by different names like the Festival of Sacrifice, and many more.

Celebrated with fantastic piety and pageantry throughout the history of the nation, the Eid is marked among people of all ages with entertainment and happiness. Eid celebrations are considered as the most important festivals in Islamic calendar.

While customs of celebrations have seen significant changes with time, some traditions. Throughout the years, though, the one thing that has not changed about Eid festivals is that they are a way to transcend the mundane tasks of everyday life and look beyond, for the ultimate truth and light of humanity.

Eid Mubarik

The day begins in the mosques during the wee hours of the morning where blessings and special prayers are provided. A unique feast total of delectable dishes are ready in each and every household as family members and beloved ones are invited.

Wearing new garments also part of the tradition and everyone will be welcomed by saying “Eid Mubarak”, or Eid greetings. The evening is spent in music, dancing and other modes of entertainment, such as Boduberu, which is a traditional Maldivian mix of songs and dances for both men and women, all performed by beating drums. Other important events include ‘Koadi Kendun’, a traditional game joined by the whole society and ‘Maali Erun’, a costume parade with people dressed as devils and legends.

It is also typical to see Muslims take part in numerous functions of charity in the direction of the poor and disenfranchised during the festival as a way of goodwill and faith for all. For Maldivians is Eid is also a day of being thankful for the beautiful nation and the peace and harmony that we have been blessed with. Eid Mubarak!
